A Brief History

It started innocently enough…

My family has a tradition of picking up “unusual” books at thrift stores. (For instance, last Christmas my father received a copy of Yoga Tennis by Baba Rick Champion.) Then one day, my sister, Jenny, mentioned that she had started to accumulate quite a few nurse books…and that’s all it took. From that moment on, whenever someone came across a nurse book, they would buy it and give it to her.

When Jenny moved to Egypt for a year, she couldn’t take the Nurse Book Collection with her, so I inherited it…mainly because I was the only one who had spare shelf space. Since then, the collection has continued to grow, including additions from as far away as Cairo, London, and Costa Rica.

When The Antiques Roadshow comes to Salt Lake City, I’m going to take the collection up and have it appraised.

“When I saw you walk in the door with these, I was very excited. We often see nurse books here on The Antiques Roadshow, but it’s usually only one or two at a time. And, depending on their quality, we usually appraise them at between five and ten cents apiece.

“But this collection is so complete, in such good condition, and so well-documented that, if it were to go up for auction at a specialty health care professionals romance lilterature auction in either London, New York, or Duluth, I’m confident that it would fetch between $80,000 and $120,000.”
